New Year, New Energy: Prioritizing Self-Care in January

How are you doing as we’re making our way through January? I write this on the 7th – and I am still surrounded by folks chattering about new goals, new wants and wishes for this calendar year. This new energy is swirling around me, and is quite lovely… January invites us to set intentions, embrace new beginnings, and align with our personal goals. But with all the buzz of resolutions and planning, it’s easy to forget to slow down and take care of ourselves instead of treating life like one giant to do list.

Let’s explore how you can harness January’s energy to build a self-care foundation that supports your well-being all year long, instead of just during the buzz of resolution season.

🌙 Honor Your Body’s Cues

The New Year often sparks a “go, go, go” mentality – that giant to-do list energy coming in strong – but your body is wise, listen to it. Feeling frazzled or fatigued isn’t a signal to push harder. It’s your body asking for rest, stillness, or perhaps a moment of joy. This January, commit to tuning into your body’s cues. If you’re tired, take that nap if you can. If you’re overwhelmed, pause and breathe. Small acts of care now will help you build resilience for the months ahead instead of burning out due to trying to tackle all of the resolutions all at once.

🌙 Schedule It In

A busy schedule doesn’t have to mean self-care falls to the wayside. Treat your self-care as a non-negotiable appointment. Whether it’s a 15-minute morning meditation, a yoga class, an afternoon cup of tea, or a nightly journaling practice, write it down in your planner or calendar. Be specific about what you’ll do and when. In the whirlwind of New Year’s plans, these small, scheduled moments of care can be your anchor.

🌙 Create a Self-Care Plan

Life is unpredictable, and having a self-care plan can make all the difference when stress strikes. Use this month to assemble a self-care toolkit:

  • Emergency Self-Care List: Write down activities that calm or uplift you, such as journaling, a walk in nature, or a favorite playlist. Post this on your fridge so all family members can see it and refer to it if you start having a bit of spiral. Communicate this as one of your needs.
  • Care Package: Keep items like cozy socks, candles, or a favorite book handy for quick pick-me-ups – keep this somewhere easily accessible. The coffee table is where I keep mine! I also add fidget toys and other things that help with anxiety as well, like lavender essential oil.
  • Trusted Contacts: Identify friends or loved ones who can offer support or accountability when you need a nudge to prioritize yourself. There is no shame in reaching out for help if you need it!

Your self-care plan is your safety net during life’s busiest periods. Make it easy to access and update it regularly as your needs evolve.

🌙 Reflect and Adjust

Self-care isn’t static; it changes as you do. Take time weekly to check in with yourself. Ask, “Am I giving myself the attention I need?” If not, adjust. January’s fresh-start energy is perfect for cultivating this habit. Think of it as a gift you give to your future self—one that keeps you balanced and thriving.

As we step into this New Year, remember that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. As they say, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
By honoring your needs, planning ahead, and creating space for rest and joy, you’re building a strong foundation for 2025.

Here’s to a year of nurturing, growth, and showing up for yourself. 🌙

Love you, be well
Autumn
